Vikings Renewed for Season 5, Jonathan Rhys Meyers Joins Cast

History has renewed “Vikings” for a 20-episode fifth season, with “The Tudors” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers joining the cast.

“The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television,” said Bennett. “’Vikings’ has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Myers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of ‘Roots.'”

Meyers’ casting marks a reunion between “The Tudors” star and Hirst, creator of the Showtime drama, which ran for 4 seasons between 2007-2010.

The show is currently in the midst of its fourth season, which is also comprised of 20 episodes. Season 5 will begin production in the summer for premiere in 2017.

The series hails from MGM Television, which serves as the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada. Hirst serves as executive producer along with Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000, Sheila Hockin, John Weber of Take 5 Productions, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer and James Flynn. Jana Bennett and Arturo Interian are the executives in charge of production for History.
